God sees the real me

1 Samuel 16:6-7

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

I am 43 years old and have lived the majority of my life uncomfortable in my skin. I have never thought that I was good enough. I have repeatedly told myself that I’m not pretty enough, I’m to fat, my hair isn’t right, my clothes aren’t good enough, the list goes on. I have done this to myself my entire life.

I am starting to process the truth of God. According to the passage in 1 Samuel, God looks at our heart. God does not care about our outward appearance, He cares about the condition of our heart. David was the youngest of the brothers and was a shepherd. He was not Samuel’s first choice for king. But, God knew David’s heart and he was God’s first choice for king.

It is always good to take care of our health and our “temple”, but most importantly we need to take care of our inner “man.”

Matthew 15:18

18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.

Keep your eyes focused on Jesus and the truth of who He says you are. Don’t believe the lies of Satan, who wants you to think that you are worthless. When you feel the lies of Satan piercing your heart:

1. Say a Prayer- Surrender those negative thoughts to God. God wants you to believe the truth of who you really are, but you have to choose to surrender the negative thoughts to Him.

2. Reject the Lies- Reject Satan’s lies. Don’t buy in to his negative thinking. He will deceive you any time that he can and he delights in your acceptance of his lies. Don’t give him this power!

3. Accept the Truth- The truth is that God LOVES you! He thinks that you are beautiful just as you are! He loves you so much that every hair on your head is numbered (Matthew 10:30). Nothing happens to you that He does not know about. Your outward appearance does not matter to him. What matters is the condition of your heart. I encourage you to do your own research on your identity in Christ. Let the Word sink into your heart. Remind yourself several times a day who God says you are. His opinion is the only one that matters!

None of us is gifted with a perfect body or outward appearance. No, not one of us! We all have things about us that we wish we could change. Remember, my friend, that it is okay to love yourself just as you are. Maybe you do need to lose a few pounds (I need to lose about 60 and it is a struggle). Maybe you can’t afford designer clothes or the fancy car (It doesn’t matter! I can’t either, but simplicity is a spiritual discipline that Jesus modeled for us). Okay, so do what you need to do to be healthy, but remember that God would love you just the same if you never changed one thing about yourself, ever. God loves you as you are! I can’t say this enough.

Repeat after me: THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE LOVES ME JUST AS I AM!!! Keep repeating this until it sinks into the deep crevices of your heart.

Remember you can always contact me for prayer or encouragement. God loves you and so do I!
